The milecastles we've been posting about recently have all been to the west end of Hadrian's Wall but there is so much more to see and do than just the remains of what was the Northern Frontier. Resplendent with heather moors and delightful dales, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies just south of the Wall in Cumbria. Reflecting its important heritage this is the country’s only Geopark.

In the county’s capital of Carlisle you will find shopping, nightlife and culture. The border City’s fascinating Historic Quarter boasts a cathedral and castle along with a turbulent history of Celts, Romans, Scots, Border Reivers, feudal families and invading armies. Nearby Lanercost Priory offers a more peaceful retreat.

Head west and be rewarded with the lovely Solway coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The sand dunes and salt marshes are home to many migrant birds and wildflowers.

Southwards along the coast are the dramatic beaches of Silloth and Allonby, and the beautiful old Georgian harbours of Maryport and Whitehaven.

And with the Lake District National Park just a short journey away there’s so much to explore.

Find all of these beautiful places and what they have to offer in the interactive map of our app that can be downloaded here https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hadrians-wall/id813755774?mt=8
