Yesterday's milecastle was one of the best examples along the whole wall, however, just down the road at Milcastle 47 and 46 there are no visible remains above ground!
Milecastle 47 is located about 270 metres east of Chapel House near Gilsland, in Cumbria. The site was robbed using explosives in the 19th century and now all that remains is a slight earthwork platform in the pasture field where it once was.
Milecastle 46 is located to the west of Carviran Fort where the Roman Army Museum is now situated. There are no visible remains of the milecastle, but its site can be distinguished by a slight, turf-covered platform that is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs.
