Milecastle 40, also known as Winshields, is located located just northwest of Twice Brewed (If you dont know where this is check out our app!). Milecastle 40 was a milecastle on Hadrian's Wall that can now only be seen as turf-covered rubble banks up to 1 metre high. When the milecastle was excavated in 1908 it was found that the remains had been greatly disturbed, It was found to have a Type II gateway but no satisfactory plan of the interior buildings were recovered. Milecastle 40 has two associated turret structures. The turrets associated with Milecastle 40 are turret 40A, known as Winshields (grid reference NY74016751) and turret 40B, known as Melkridge (grid reference NY73526723). There are no visible remains of either milecastle but good sections of the wall its self can be found close to the locations of both.
