Pocket Tours, iPhone guides and tours

Frequently Asked Questions

Although Pocket Tours is intuitive to use new users may not realise how to take advantage of all of the features. Please feel free to ask for advice or to let us know that something is not working correctly. We are keen to make this as user-friendly as possible.

Q There is no introduction on how to navigate through application.

A The application is pretty straight forward, as soon as you click on an icon on the bottom of the application everything you need is right in front of you.

Q I don’t know what the different coloured blobs bottom left on the map signifies?

A The coloured circles on the bottom left of the map work like a key to tell you what the coloured pin points on the map are actually showing you. For example yellow are points of interest, blue are amenities/car parking, green are stand locations and white are photo locations.

Q How do you get to Stand 1 after listening to the history audio?

A Go to the map tab at the bottom of the screen, make sure that the key is set to stand locations by tapping on the circle until it turns green and then find stand 1.

Q Difficult to scroll audio synopsis text on stands unless you zoom in?

A This is an app zoom issue. To read the whole stand text it is easier the more zoomed in you are. This does not affect the size of the text just the manoeuvrability of the stand audio/text box itself.

Q If I look at a photo, it would be nice to have a button “Show on Map”?

A Even though there is not a button the map key works in the same way. If the key is set to white, the numbers on the pin points correspond to the numbers on the photos.

Q The map has the pinch-zoom interface, but lacks the other things like centring the map on where you currently are or orienting the map based on the compass

A This is true. Other functionality will be introduced in subsequent versions

Q It may be that the app is trying to centre the map as it keeps popping up a box saying it can’t locate my position and asking if I have internet access. The regular map interface seems to know where I am however?  If I had downloaded it in advance so as not to need internet access – this would probably worry me that it was trying to download stuff.  In practice, I think it’s trying to use the internet to determine its location? I wonder if these might be 3GS versus iPhone 4 issues

A The phone uses a number of methods for determining position. If the GPS signal is weak then it will triangulate from mobile phone masts or get its position via WiFi from the internet. the device decides how to do this and throws up the error message. It wont download data unless you have that functionality enabled.

Q It’s called ‘PocketTours’ but there is little evidence in the app of a ‘tour’ - not a pre-planned route anyway

A Look in the photo library for shortened tours or go sequentially from 1-15
